Hot Girls with film cameras!
June 4, 2010
Okay, so some of you are about to be disappointed by this post. (You know who you are!) No, you will not see any photos of hot girls with film cameras. Read on, if you can forgive me, and you’ll see where I’m going with this.
Of course there are females who prefer film photography, but the male percentage is definitely much higher. I believe this is true for photography in general, although the gap is slowly closing. My position is that if film companies really wanted to do something to increase their film sales they’d run advertising campaigns featuring hothotHOT girls using film cameras, reclining with film cameras, etc… Hey, it worked for the automobile industry!
The other day I wandered around with one of my vintage film cameras and took note of the reactions I drew, and while I wasn’t surprised at the results I still found them kinda interesting. The women hardly gave me or my camera a second glance. The guys were a different story! There wasn’t a single one that didn’t at least do a double-take at what was cradled in my hands, and most of them stopped for a closer look. Patrons enjoying the patio seating at a local grill ended up grouping around me to ask questions and get a better look. These guys ranged from those who’d obviously seen better days to well-dressed corporate types. As I approached the grill they were separated in their own little social islands, but they all shared what must be an inherent male love for gizmos, and even after I moved on they continued the discussion with each other–no longer separated.
I’ve joked about this before, but obviously there’s also something to it! I’ll continue in the same light-hearted vein and admit that I wonder how many guys use this as a built-in excuse to talk to cute girls. “Hey, no, I’m not a desperate perv! I find your camera very interesting!”
Female photographers get ready to throw bricks at my head in 3…2…1…

Well, after my initial disappointment at not seeing some nice b/w photos of hot chicks, I found what you were saying to be most interesting. I understand, but am also wondering what you wearing??? I’m sure it wasn’t those fringe sandals!
Ha, Ted! I KNEW I could count on you to ask that! (Seriously, I was thinking about it as I wrote and almost included a description.)
Plain black flip-flops, black knit yoga capris (not tight), and a plain white tank top (also not tight).
Yes, it was actually pretty interesting.
Yeah… it was the tank top that did it!
Seriously, I bet that was pretty interesting. I can see where guys would be intrigued with your equipment… the camera… and ask questions about it. I was impressed when I saw the different cameras you have… I had seen those types before and I think my father had one that viewed from the top like that… photography was his hobby and my grandfather too. I have a million old negatives from both… maybe someday (wistful sigh). We had a darkroom in the basement when I was a kid and I remember the big enlarger he had. He let me go down and watch him develop pictures… I thought it was cool in the dark with only a red light on, and seeing the image magically appear in the tray of fluid. My mother was his favorite subject and he took many photos of her. It is kind of funny to see some of them with her posing to humor him. But they are nice to have and see her many outfits over the years. In fact, she was also her fathers favorite subject too, so I have younger pictures of her too. But I digress… and it is your blog!
In this age of little point and shoot digitals, and let’s not forget cell phones, it would be kind of unusual and interesting to see a woman with a Rolli around her neck. And you know what, you have the eye and skills to back up the look! Plus, what better reason to strike up a conversation with a cute girl.
Oh, by the way, next time let’s not resort to cheap sensationalism to get people to read your blog!
No, Ted, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the tank top! I wasn’t exactly a vision of lovliness!
And don’t worry about digressing on my blog–I like discussions and wherever they might take us!
That’s wonderful about your grandfather and father. You might consider getting a film scanner to digitize all those negatives. Matter of fact, that’s something the budding young photographer in your family might be interested in doing. I’m sure she’d be fascinated by the history, process, etc… I know I sure would!
Frankly, I was hoping to feast my eyes upon some black and white photography.
Maybe another day……
Sorry I couldn’t oblige this time, Nancy! I’ll keep that in mind for the next post. But there IS a nice little b&w pic of a Porsche 356 on this one. Does that make up for it at least a little?
