While others continue to debate the merits of digital versus analog, Jamie Powell Sheppard is a fine art photographer who has cast her vote decidedly in the analog column. She shoots black and white film almost exclusively, and because she’s an admitted precisionist, she processes her own film, too. Jamie especially enjoys using vintage cameras when possible, and some day soon, her camera collection will need its own bedroom.
Visiting the Hoosier State this year? May through December 2010, three of her images are included in the Landmarks Through the Viewfinder exhibit traveling Southern Indiana before they find a permanent home in the offices of the Indiana Landmarks foundation.
Those exploring the unique showplaces of the Dallas Design District might want to stop in at Coupralux Fine Art Printmaker & Gallery. The reproduction process is fascinating to watch, and some of Jamie’s most popular images are offered there through both the Artists and Designer Collections.
If you ever find yourself in the Memphis area and barbeque or Elvis have begun to pall, take a quick drive to the nearby town of Collierville, TN. There you can see some of her work in the excellent Lucius E. & Elsie C. Burch, Jr. Library.
Although Jamie originally wanted to be a Marine Biologist, her parents refused to help pay for her education unless she chose to major in her other love–photography. Fortunately they arrived at a happy compromise, and Jamie received a Bachelor’s degree of Science in both Photography and Earth Sciences from Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Jamie was her parents’ only souvenir of the Bicentennial, born that summer in Dallas, TX. She felt a bit like a square peg in a round hole there but never planned on leaving until her husband’s employment moved them first to Tennessee and then later to Louisville, KY. She was sad to leave her family and friends behind but really enjoys both the vision Louisville draws from her and the enthusiastic art community.
Hi Jamie! Thanks for following the Blonde Coyote! The ruins in your signature photo (up top) look really familiar — any chance they were photographed in Cerrillos, New Mexico? Beautiful blog! Cheers, Mary
Hey, Mary!
Yes, that’s your Roundhouse, the stacked stone ruins at Rogersville Ranch. We were out there a couple of summers ago. I just sent Mike a message asking if he was okay with me including info about his place in a blog post I’m working on, and he shared your blog with me. I’m looking forward to reading through it!
Haha that’s great! I knew I recognized those rocks, but I didn’t see a New Mexico connection in your bio. So glad you got to see this place! Isn’t it amazing? I’ll have to thank Mike for spreading the word about TBC. Best of luck! I’ll be reading! M
Yes, I love the Southwest–pretty sure it’s my spiritual home.
I forgot to ask–may I link to your blog in my NM post as well?
